Iceland - Off Roading

After visiting the tourist attractions in Iceland, it was time to go off roading.

Iceland snow ice tour jeep

To make sure we experienced Iceland properly, our last two days were a chasing ice tour. We were picked up from our hotel in Reykjavik by a 'super jeep' tour bus and went on our way.

Lava Caving

Our first stop on the tour was a lava cave - we soon found out this wasn't a cave you can walk in to, but a near-vertical drop you have to do feet first.

Inside you find solidified lava and icicles everywhere. There are also 'sky lights' that let both the sun and snow in.

Getting out was a lot harder than getting in . . .

Gljufrafoss Waterfall

The next stop was Gljufrafoss Waterfall - partially obscured by rock you have to scramble a portion of the river to get inside. The soaking with freezing water is well worth it as you find yourself in a cave covered in icicles and icy formations, with a huge waterfall coming down almost on top of you.

My camera began its downfall here, but we got a few good shots.

Icelandic Horse and Animal Farming

As we were all a bit wet and cold, the next stop was a small farm in the countryside. The farmer and his wife very kindly served us Icelandic pancakes and answered any questions we had.

Fun fact #1: Icelandic horse hormones are used in contraceptive pills

Fun fact #2: Icelandic horses have 5 gaits (ways of walking/running), compared to the usual 3

Fun fact #3: Icelandic lamb is so deliciously tender because they are free to roam the mountains during the summer which strengthens their muscles

Skogafoss Waterfall

By this time of the day we were pretty wet and tired, but we got out to get a couple of pictures in front of Skogafoss Waterfall.

Black Sand Beaches

As Iceland is volcanic, you will find black sand beaches from basalt lava.

Tips and Essentials

  • Take a soft lens wipe with you - your camera will definitely be getting wet if you going inside a waterfall and it's too good an opportunity not to take a picture. Research in to waterproofing options (let me know if you find any good ones!) and use a phone if you start to get waterlogged - nothing will be worse than ruining your camera for the rest of the trip.
